Contact person(s) Dr. Lisa Sorenson, Jeff Gerbracht, Dr. Frank Rivera
Location Monte Cristi, Dominican Republic
Short description

After 3 continuous years perfecting the methodology for this type of environment at the salt flats of Cargill (Bonaire), we are going to apply it on similar areas of the Caribbean where large populations of migratory shorebirds are expected. In this occasion at the Salt Flats of Monte Cristi. Results from the previous CWC surveys carried at the beginning of the year have demonstrated that Bonaire is a site of regional importance for migratory shorebirds and it could be the same for this area of the D.R. This is specially interesting when Canada Environment estimates a 60% decline in their population numbers. Funded by Canada Environment and in cooperation with personnel form the USFWS, BirdsCaribbean, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, and local organizations, WILDCONSCIENCE will collect and manage the data for this project.

Organization(s) Personal client
Contact person(s) Personal client
Location Bonaire, Caribbean Netherlands
Short description

Casuarina is a fast-growing plant which produces heavy shade and a thick blanket of leaves beneath it, reducing habitat value. Its dense monoculture thickets displace native plant species. Once established, Casuarina alters light, temperature, soil chemistry and hydrology of the habitats it invades. Conducting this removal will require special tree and rock-climbing techniques and equipment.

Project Petition to OLB for a change in legislation regarding issuing of building permits
Organization(s) WILDCONSCIENCE BV
Contact person(s) Fernando Simal, Jimmy van Rijn
Location Bonaire, Dutch Caribbean
Short description

As a celebration of our successful 2nd year of activities, we decided to donate 200 working hours to the Bonairean community. These hours were invested in the elaboration of a technical document to support a petition to the Openbaar Lichaam Bonaire (Bonaire Island Government) to make adaptations in legislation regarding the issuing building permits. The modifications we propose do not hamper the goals of the projects, however they create opportunity for habitat restoration and improvement in very simple and non-costly ways that are already included in the projects. In this way, we can easily start compensating our nature and our future generations for more than two centuries of non-sustainable extraction of our natural resources, habitat loss, habitat fragmentation and desertification. The petition and the link to the document in different languages was placed in www.change.org during the month of October.

Regarding the potential construction of the new WEB water desalinization plant at Piedra Altu, Bonaire, Civil Engineering Caribbean hired WILDCONSCIENCE to conduct a preliminary survey of the area. The main goal of the study was to confirm the presence/absence of caves and bat colonies that could be negatively impacted by the project. During the study we surveyed two new caves that contained bat colonies and elaborated low resolution maps. Additionally, we provide in our report mitigation actions for the potential impacts on caves and bats.

Organization(s) STINAPA Bonaire

Location Bonaire, Dutch Caribbean
Short description

WILDCONSCIENCE donated a working day, transport and deep diving equipment to remove over 150 meters of fisherman's rock-anchor line that was lying (and abrading) the corals at the Karpata Diving Reserve. We like to think a lot of damage was avoided by not having this rope tangled around corals and sponges during the storm Matthew that was coming. The line was cut at 66 meters depth, but it kept going. Hopefully, we can go back after the storm and get the rest. Getting entangled in abandoned ropes and fishing gear is the cause of a lot of fatalities of marine mammals, sea turtles and large fish.

Short description

For the next six months WILDCONSCIENCE will invest a week per month in collecting and inputting data for the long-term study of the Bonaire native plants' phenology (yearly cycles of production of leaves, fruits and flowers). This project was designed and implemented in 2012 by Dr. Jafet Nassar (IVIC, Venezuela) and Fernando Simal while working for STINAPA Bonaire. We started with the phenology of candle cacti and agave plants only, as this is the main source of food for our 2 keystone species of nectar-feeding bats, but soon added more than 20 species of native trees to the project. It is satisfying to see that STINAPA Bonaire continued the data collecting efforts and also being able to work on the project once again.
